Choosing the right paper size for your print job can mean the difference between a high-impact marketing campaign and a costly mistake. If you have ever wondered why a business card fits perfectly in your wallet or why an A4 flyer looks balanced, it all comes down to standardisation.
At Barkers Litho, we work with a vast array of paper sizes every day. Here is a straightforward guide to understanding how paper dimensions work, how they are used, and how to choose the right one for your next project.
The A-Series: The Global Standard
Across the UK and Europe, the ISO 216 standard (the A-Series) is the most widely used system for paper sizing.
The genius of the A-series lies in its geometry. Every size in the series has an aspect ratio of exactly 1: square root 2 (approximately 1:1.414). This means that if you cut any A-series sheet exactly in half across its longest side, you get two sheets of the next size down, and they will retain the exact same proportions.
-
A0 is the starting point, measuring exactly 1 square metre in total area.
-
Fold an A0 sheet in half, and you get A1.
-
Fold an A1 in half, and you get A2, and so on, all the way down to a tiny A8 pocket label.

To help you plan your next print project, here is a breakdown of the most common A-series dimensions and their typical applications in commercial printing:

The B-Series and C-Series: Envelopes and Oversizes
While the A-series handles the vast majority of day-to-day printing, two other closely related series are vital to know:
The C-Series (The Envelope Standard)
The C-series is designed specifically for envelopes, sized geometrically halfway between the A and B series. A C-series envelope is precisely engineered to fit its corresponding A-series sheet perfectly.
-
An A4 sheet of paper fits perfectly into a C4 envelope without folding.
-
If you fold an A4 sheet in half once (making it A5), it will fit seamlessly into a C5 envelope.
-
If you fold an A4 sheet into thirds, it fits into a DL envelope (the standard long office envelope).
The B-Series (The Printer’s Secret)
The B-series is larger than the A-series but shares the same proportions. In commercial printing, we often use B-size sheets (or oversized formats like SRA) to print A-size designs. This gives us the extra space required to include the trim and bleed marks (as covered in our previous article) before we cut the paper down to its final A-series size.
Traditional Formats: Business Cards and Beyond
Not every piece of print follows the ISO system. Some products have entrenched traditional sizes because of how they are used:
-
Standard UK Business Cards: These are usually 85 x 55 mm. This exact size ensures they slot cleanly into standard wallet card slots.
-
Compliment Slips: These measure 210 x 99 mm. They are exactly one-third the height of an A4 sheet, meaning they fit perfectly inside a standard DL envelope alongside a product or sample.
Choosing the Right Size for Your Budget
When designing your artwork, sticking to standard A-series dimensions is usually the most cost-effective path. Because commercial printing presses like ours are built to optimise these dimensions, standard sizes result in minimal paper waste during the cutting process.
However, if you want your brand to truly stand out, opting for a custom square cut or a unique die-cut shape can create a highly premium, memorable tactile experience.
